How to Split PDF Pages

Why split a PDF?

Splitting makes sense when a document contains more than you need, or when different parts need to go to different people:

• Extracting a single chapter from a course pack
• Sending one section of a report without sharing the whole thing
• Removing blank or unnecessary pages before sharing
• Breaking a large file into smaller ones for email

Three ways to split a PDF

1. Extract specific pages

Pick individual pages or ranges — pages 3–7, or pages 1, 5, and 12 — and save them as a new document. This is the most precise approach and the one people need most often.

2. Split at intervals

Divide the document every N pages: every 5 pages, every 10 pages, and so on. Useful for breaking a long scan into manageable chunks.

3. Separate every page

Create one file per page. Handy when you need to reassemble pages in a different order or process them individually.

What splitting preserves (and what it doesn't)

Like merging, splitting copies pages as-is. The extracted pages retain their original quality — text stays selectable, images stay sharp. But elements that span the whole document may be lost:

• Bookmarks and internal links that point to pages outside the extracted range
• Form fields (the field structure may not carry over)
• Document-level metadata

Splitting vs. deleting pages

These are different operations. Splitting creates new files from selected pages. Deleting removes pages from an existing document. If your goal is to produce a shorter version of the same file, you want extraction — split out the pages you want and use the result.
