How Unit Conversion Works
Converting between measurement systems seems simple, but some conversions are exact while others are approximations. Here's what that means in practice.
Why unit conversion matters
Different fields and countries use different measurement systems. A recipe from Europe uses grams and Celsius; one from the cups and Fahrenheit. A construction plan in millimeters needs to be understood in inches. Unit conversion bridges these systems.
But not all conversions are created equal — and knowing the difference helps you decide when a result is precise enough for your needs.
Exact conversions
Some unit relationships are defined exactly, with no rounding:
- 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters (by definition)
- 1 foot = 12 inches
- 1 meter = 100 centimeters
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
These conversions produce precise results. If you convert 5 inches to millimeters, the answer is exactly 127 mm — no approximation involved.
Approximate conversions
Conversions between measurement systems often involve factors that are rounded for convenience:
- 1 kilogram ≈ 2.2 pounds (more precisely 2.20462...)
- 1 mile ≈ 1.6 kilometers (more precisely 1.60934...)
- 1 liter ≈ 0.264 gallons
For everyday use, these approximations are fine. Converting 5 kilometers to miles as "about 3.1 miles" is close enough for estimating a run. But for engineering, manufacturing, or scientific work, the full precision matters.
Temperature is special
Temperature conversion isn't just multiplication — the scales have different zero points. The formulas are:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: (°C × 9/5) + 32 = °F
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: (°F − 32) × 5/9 = °C
This is why 0°C is 32°F — the scales don't start at the same point. Temperature conversions are exact when using the full formula, but mental math shortcuts (like "double and add 30") are approximations.
When precision matters
Use exact conversions when:
- Engineering and manufacturing tolerances are tight
- Medical dosages depend on weight conversions
- Scientific measurements require accuracy
- Legal or contractual specifications reference specific units
Approximate conversions are fine when:
- Estimating travel distances
- Cooking and baking (most recipes tolerate small variations)
- Everyday comparisons ("about how tall is that?")
- Fitness tracking and casual measurement
